The Car That Spoke from a Record

Under the dash of a 1981 Datsun lived a tiny phonograph with six parallel grooves, a rubber belt, and a needle that dropped onto the right message when the car needed to speak.

In 1981, Nissan began selling a car that had a small vinyl record inside it. The record was three inches across, white, and cut with six parallel grooves — one per message. A DC motor spun it through a rubber belt. A tiny tonearm with a relay-style coil pushed a needle onto the correct groove, and a breathy voice came through the car's speakers.

"Left door is open." "Right door is open." "Parking brake is on." "Fuel level is low." "Keys in the ignition." "Lights are on."

The "parking brake" came out as "bocking brake." This became the system's calling card.

The Nissan/Datsun Voice Warning System was a box about four inches on a side, mounted under the dash, labeled "Audible Warning – Don't Drop." It was a complete miniature phonograph, engineered to survive automotive vibration and work regardless of orientation. When a sensor fired — the door open, the fuel low — the box's analog control circuitry chose the right groove, spun the disc, and dropped the stylus. A hard bump mid-message could make the needle skip. Otherwise, it just worked.


The parallel-groove record was a tiny family of the era. The 1977 Mattel Monday Night Football game used one. Some Japanese home appliances in the late 1970s did too. But the Nissan Voice Warning is the most complete expression of the idea: a voice interface that is entirely mechanical, with zero digital processing between the sensor and the sound.

That is what makes it HCI. The Voice Warning is voice output achieved through pure analog audio — the mechanical extreme of a design space the museum otherwise sees through synthesized speech. The Minolta Talker spoke from a speech chip. The TSI Speech+ spoke from a ROM. The TRS-80 Voice Synthesizer spoke from phoneme codes written in video memory. The Nissan Voice Warning spoke from a needle in a groove.

It also beat the digital talking cars to market. Chrysler's Electronic Voice Alert, built on a Texas Instruments TMS5110A LPC speech chip, arrived for the 1983 model year. The two are the perfect analog/digital pair: one speaks from a needle, the other from a linear-predictive-coding chip. The Voice Warning was replaced by a solid-state unit in the 1985 Maxima, ending the era of the vinyl-record car.


Collector Murilee Martin documented the Voice Warning across two decades of junkyard finds. He reported that every one of his thirty-plus-year-old phonograph units still played at least one alert. The system's packaging was a masterpiece of physical design — a record player small enough to hide under a dashboard, rugged enough to survive a decade of potholes.

The Voice Warning joins the Buick Riviera Graphic Control Center as the second automotive dashboard interface in the museum. The Buick touched. The Nissan spoke. The Buick was digital, the Nissan was analog. Together they bracket the strange moment when cars began to talk to their drivers — before anyone had agreed on what a talking car should sound like, or how it should work.

Nissan tried one answer. The answer was a record player. It was not the wrong answer. It was just the last of its kind.
