The Front Panel Was the Game
The IMSAI 8080 had no keyboard, no screen, no monitor in ROM — you were the boot loader, toggling every byte in by hand. And its manual shipped a game: a bit pattern circulating across the front-panel LEDs, played on the very same switches you used to program the machine.

In 1980 and 1981, the same Roland team built the same idea twice: a sixteen-step grid for writing music. The TR-808 showed you the grid — LEDs walking the columns so you always knew where you were. The TB-303 hid it completely: no display, two passes over sixteen keys, no readout. Both failed commercially. Both invented a genre.

Designed by a former NASA engineer who wanted 'a game that wants to play with you,' Merlin hid secrets from children and dared them to argue with it — the machine as opponent, not tool.
