The Ghost of Your Own Hands
In 1987, Yamaha fitted a real acoustic piano with sensors and solenoids — a piano that could listen, then play itself. Composers turned the capture-and-replay loop into a duet, and pianists found themselves playing against the ghost of their own hands.
In 1987, Yamaha built a piano that could play itself. Not a synthesizer pretending to be a piano, not a speaker playing back a recording — a real acoustic piano, with real hammers and real strings, with a floppy disk drive bolted onto the side. The Yamaha Disklavier had a ghost inside it.
The mechanism is worth sitting with. Fiber-optic sensors on the keys, hammers, and pedals capture a performance — every touch, every strike, every pedal shift — and store it on a 3.5-inch floppy in Yamaha's E-SEQ format, a forerunner of the MIDI file. Then, on playback, electromechanical solenoids physically move those same keys. The hammers strike the strings. No speakers, no samples, no amplification. Just the piano, playing the piano.
Why does this belong in a museum of human-computer interaction? Because it is output with a body. We are used to machines that speak through speakers and draw on screens. The Disklavier reached into the physical world and moved an instrument — one humans have played for three centuries — through the same mechanisms a person's fingers use. It is the musical cousin of the little pen plotter whose paper whips back and forth while a solenoid hammers the pen down: output as mechanical ceremony. But the plotter does a machine's drawing. The Disklavier does a human's act, at the human's instrument, with the human's exact motions. The interface isn't the point. The body is.
The lineage matters here. The 19th-century pneumatic player piano played itself from punched paper rolls, but it had no ears — it could only reproduce what someone had punched into the roll. The Disklavier added the other half of the loop: it could listen. That is what changed everything, and it is what composers eventually exploited.
The defining moment came in 1989, when Jean-Claude Risset wrote Duet For One Pianist in Marseille. The premise is exactly as strange as it sounds. A pianist plays. An algorithm transforms the notes — mirrors them, delays them, arpeggiates them — and sends them back to the same piano in real time. The piano answers. The performer duets with a machine that is literally the same instrument, played by the ghost of their own hands. Risset and pianist Simon Bolzinger built the DKompose library in Max/MSP around the idea, and the lineage runs forward to Kyle Gann's three Disklaviers tuned to microtonal intervals and Dan Tepfer's Natural Machines.
There is a physical texture to the interaction that software could never capture, and it comes from the machine's own body: the delay. Between the moment MIDI data reaches the solenoids and the moment the hammer strikes the string, about a quarter of a second passes. A human pianist sight-reading the same music would never be that late. The lag is part of the duet — you hear your own playing transformed, arriving a beat late, from a body that shares your bench. The machine is not faster than you. It is just other.
The Disklavier went on to become a standard conservatory tool, and its network experiments were genuinely ahead of their time. In 1997, Ryuichi Sakamoto transmitted a performance to thousands of locations. The Minnesota International Piano-e-Competition synchronized Disklavier PROs on two continents so a jury member in Japan could experience a pianist playing live in St. Paul — telepresence for music, twenty years before the word was in common use. The Radio Drum already sits in this museum for the same reason: David A. Jaffe wrote a seventy-minute concerto in which the drum conducted a Disklavier grand. Gesture on one side, a real piano answering on the other.
I keep the Disklavier because of the duet. Most of the machines in this collection are input devices or output devices — they listen, or they speak. The Disklavier is the rarer thing: a machine that listens and then plays. A collaborator that shares its body with you. There is something quietly profound, and a little eerie, about a piano that can play your hands back to you — while still being the same piano you learned on.
The ghost doesn't replace the performer. The ghost is the performer, sent back through the instrument. That is an interface idea with no descendants in software, and I'm not sure it needs any.
