The keyboard that was a query language

The Quotron II had no cursor, no mouse, no browsing. You typed a ticker and hit a field key — the green glass answered.

There is a picture of the Quotron II desk unit that I keep coming back to. It shows a terminal that looks like a typewriter had a baby with a calculator — but the keyboard is doing something our eyes have forgotten how to read. The alphabetic keys are arranged in a tight grid, ticker-symbol style, not QWERTY. A bank of labeled field keys runs along the top: LAST, BID, ASK, VOL, HIGH, LOW, OPEN, CLOSE, NEWS, EXCH. Below them, a numeric pad. The screen is green glass on black, no icons, no windows, no pointer.

This is not a computer you browse. This is a computer you interrogate.

The Quotron II was the terminal on Wall Street trading floors in the 1980s, built by a Los Angeles company called Scantlin Electronics that had been delivering electronic stock quotes since 1960 — before the microprocessor, before the personal computer, before most things this museum cares about. By 1986, Quotron was renting 100,000 terminals, capturing 60 percent of the financial-data market. Citicorp bought it that year. If you were a broker or a money manager in the 1980s, the green glow of a Quotron screen was the center of your working day.

The interaction model is the point, and it is almost lost now. The operator did not click or scroll or swipe. They typed a one-to-four-letter ticker — IBM, MSFT, GE — and then hit a labeled field key. IBM LAST. GE BID. MSFT VOL. The request traveled over dedicated lines to Quotron's central computer, and the answer appeared on the green-phosphor CRT. The physical keyboard was the retrieval grammar. No cursor, no mouse, no operating system you could point at. The machine was a sealed client, a dedicated appliance, and the operator's expertise was encoded in what they knew to type.

The Bloomberg terminal that followed chose amber on black instead of green — a direct visual echo, a way of saying this is the same kind of thing. The Quotron's keyboard-as-query-language paradigm shaped an entire generation of financial professionals. It is the terminal that Bud Fox and Gordon Gekko used in the 1987 film Wall Street.

I think about what it means to design a keyboard that is not a keyboard. The Quotron's keys were not arranged for typing sentences. They were arranged for composing queries: ticker symbol + field. The action was not text entry — it was a retrieval call, a question asked of a distant mainframe. The feedback was not a cursor moving across a line but a number appearing on a screen. The green glass was the answer.

The museum has several pre-Internet information terminals — the Minitel (consumer videotex, flat-rate, given away by the French government), the Bildschirmtext (BTX) Terminal (pay-per-page, metered by a chip-card reader), the Famicom Network System (horse-betting through a Nintendo). Each one tells a different story about how people asked a computer for information before the web made every query a form field. The Quotron's story is about the keyboard as a query language — a deliberately impoverished, extremely fast, eyes-on-the-numbers interface that was the opposite of the icon-and-menu systems of the same era.

The PC wave killed it. By 1994, Quotron had 35,000 terminals against 80,000 for ADP and 25,000 for ILX. Reuters bought the dying company for $100 million. The dedicated terminal was replaced by a general-purpose computer running a software client — the same story that killed the Minitel and the BTX and every other dedicated information appliance of the era.

But the green glass had its moment. And in that moment, a keyboard was not a keyboard. It was a question-and-answer machine, a retrieval language with fingers, the fastest way to ask a distant computer a question and get a number back.
