The Memory You Carried in Your Pocket
Before the Smartphone, Before the PDA, Before the Organizer — There Was a Calculator That Secretly Remembered Names and Phone Numbers
The Toshiba LC-836MN Memo Note 30 looks like a calculator. It is a calculator. It does arithmetic. But it has a secret: it is also the first portable electronic data bank, and it proves that people wanted to carry computer memory in their pockets a full nine years before anyone seriously tried to sell them one.
The year is 1978. The first Palm Pilot is eighteen years away. The Psion Organiser is eight years away. The Sharp Wizard is eleven. But in a Toshiba factory, a two-chip set — the T3690 and T3691 — has been paired to do something strange: the T3690 handles the calculator's normal work, and the T3691 provides 2,048 bits of storage. That is 256 bytes. You can fit thirty records in it, each exactly six alphabetical characters and eight numerals wide.
The problem is getting those letters in.
The Memo Note 30 has no QWERTY keyboard. It has no alphabetical keypad. It has twelve calculator keys — 0 through 9, a decimal point, and an equals sign — plus a few function buttons. To enter the name "DAVE" you press the key labeled 3 three times (3 cycles through D, E, and F), then the key labeled 2 twice (A, B, C... wait, that's 2-A-B-C), then the key labeled 8 three times (T, U, V), then the key labeled 3 again (E). The same way you texted on a flip phone — except that multi-tap texting was itself seventeen years away.
The display adds an eighth segment to the standard calculator seven-segment layout, purely so letters render legibly. The 8 looks like a capital A. The 6 looks like a lowercase b. The 0 with a slash through it is the letter O. You learn to read in this cramped alphabet because the machine has no other way to show you what you typed.
And the records are fixed-size. Six letters for the name. Eight numerals for the data. Bank name and balance. Name and birthday. Passport and license number. Radio Shack, which sold the same machine as the EC-4002, published a manual suggesting what you might store: caloric values of foods, exchange rates, golf scores. The machine does not search. It does not sort. It has thirty slots, and you scan them sequentially by pressing the MEMORY key.
What makes the Memo Note 30 genuinely strange — and genuinely important — is that it proves the demand for electronic memory existed before the hardware was comfortable. The interface is not user-friendly. It is user-possible. You learn to spell through a calculator because the alternative is carrying a paper address book, and paper cannot be searched, paper cannot be backed up, paper takes up space in your pocket that could hold something thinner.
The Memo Note 30 is the ancestor of every organizer, every PDA, every smartphone contact list. It is also the ancestor of the friction that the Sharp Wizard and Psion Organiser II and Casio PB-1000 would later dissolve — the entire decade of the 1980s was spent making the Memo Note 30's idea more comfortable. The Wizard gave you a real keyboard. The Casio PB-1000 gave you a touchscreen. The Psion gave you a database.
But the first one to carry an electronic memory was a calculator. It had 256 bytes. It had a display that added an extra bar to every digit so you could read the letter hiding in the number. And it did not need to be comfortable. It only needed to be possible.
The Memo Note 30 was also sold by Hanimex as the SLC 891, and its successor, the LC-1038MN, added an alarm clock. Canon's LC-MEMO, a smaller alternative, shipped the same year — so two companies independently arrived at the same idea in 1978, which is how you know the idea was ready. The chip was cheap enough. The market was not yet shaped. But the urge to carry a little machine that remembered things for you — that was already there, waiting for a form factor to grow into.
I love this artifact because it is not the first of its kind. It is the first proof of its kind. The calculator that learned to remember names, and squeezed the alphabet through a keypad that had never been designed for it, and showed the rest of the industry a path that took another decade to widen.
