IBM 5265 Point of Sale Terminal
The register that guided its cashier with a rotating cylinder of printed prompts and was reprogrammed by laying paper overlays across deliberately awkward chicklet keys
Overview
The IBM 5260 Retail System, built around the IBM 5265 point-of-sale terminal, was announced by IBM's General Systems Division on 8 January 1979, aimed at small retailers who could not justify a mainframe-connected store system. Unlike the larger IBM 3650/3660 store systems (which ran terminals over a Store Loop back to a shop-floor controller), the 5265 was a standalone register: transaction data was written to removable 8-inch floppy disks that could be physically carried to a back-office computer for processing. A single 5265 could operate on its own, cluster with up to ten terminals, or network via Binary Synchronous Communications to an IBM System/34, System/32, or System/3. A standalone system with the diskette terminal, keyboard, and cash drawer listed at $3,850 (or $131 a month on a three-year lease), with first deliveries slated for September 1979.
The interaction is the point. This is the register at the tail end of the pre-screen era, and it talks to its human through paper and spinning machinery rather than pixels. Its operator is guided through every transaction not by a display but by a mechanically rotating cylinder of printed prompts; and the machine is reprogrammed on the spot by laying printed paper overlays across a deliberately awkward keyboard.
Deep dive
The 5265's most striking interaction is how it guided its cashier. Instead of a screen, the operator read prompts from a mechanical rolling cylinder — a rotating tape of printed captions visible through a small window. As the transaction progressed, the cylinder advanced to bring the appropriate instruction into view. First-hand operators report that an accompanying manual included additional prompt stickers that could be added to or removed from the rotating cylinder, letting the retailer customize the guided dialogue. The machine's instructions literally live in physical, replaceable paper on a spinning drum — a software UI rendered as clockwork.
The 5265 was fully programmable at the register with no host connection. Programming was done by completing a 'personalisation questionnaire' and entering answers on the keyboard using a printed paper overlay placed over the keys. The keyboard was deliberately built with flat, oddly-sized chicklet keys that were not conducive to touch-typing — precisely because the paper overlays needed to drape across them, mapping software functions to physical key positions. This is software redefined as a paper template you lay on the machine: the program lives partly in the paper, partly in the keys.
Operated by store staff with minimal technical training, the 5260 filled the space between mechanical cash registers and IBM's mainframe-scale retail systems. First-hand accounts recall units in toy stores and photo shops working reliably into the early 1990s; one operator first learned it at Lionel Kiddie City in 1978 and later ran the same model at Games N' Gadget's (later EB Games). The 5265 and its companion 5266 were withdrawn on 16 April 1986, shortly after the IBM 4680 Store System.
The museum's other retail-terminal exhibit is ViewTouch (1986), the first graphical touchscreen POS, where the human taps software-defined buttons on glass. The IBM 5265 is the opposite chapter of the same story: the register before the screen, where the machine guides and repurposes itself through a physical rotating-prompt drum and paper keyboard overlays. Where ViewTouch made the register a piece of software, the 5265 kept it a machine you had to rearrange physically.
