The strangest thing about the first supermarket checkout scanner is not the laser. It is what the laser did to the person running the register. For decades the checkout was a conversation — a fast, brutal, human one. The cashier read a price off a shelf tag, typed it into the register, hit a key, and waited for the drawer. Every item was a small transaction of its own, with its own keystrokes and its own chance of a mis-key. The machine asked, the human answered.

With a keyboard you are the encoder. With the scanner you are the aimer. Your entire job is to present the object to a fixed sensing surface at the right angle, at the right distance, in the right light — and then trust a beep you cannot argue with. If it does not beep, you do not correct a keystroke; you try again to make the object legible to the glass.
The machine's only answer is yes or no, and even the yes is minimal. There is nothing to watch, no echo of what you did. The scanner does not tell you what it read; it tells you that it read something. The trust that replaced the typing is the interface.
The worker-side reduction
I keep coming back to the cashier, because the checkout scanner is one of the most consequential HCI changes of the era that nobody calls an HCI change. It is the labor-transformation artifact: the moment a computer interface quietly rewrote what a job was. The cashier's hands moved from the register to the groceries. The skill that had been "know the codes, type fast, don't mis-key" became "offer every object to the window until it beeps." A whole class of typing knowledge became optional, then obsolete, in the span of a checkout redesign.
It pairs beautifully with the machine that ran the other end of that change — the IBM 5265 Point of Sale Terminal, a register whose software lived as a spinning drum of printed prompts under a window, and whose program was a paper overlay you draped over the keys. Same decade, same checkout, opposite philosophy. The 5265 is software as clockwork: a machine walking the cashier through each step with mechanical captions. The scanner is software as a single tone: the machine reducing the interaction to one gesture, one beep, one trust. Between them they bracket the whole strange moment before ViewTouch turned the register into a pane of glass you could tap.
The beep
The supermarket scanner also quietly invented a sound so woven into modern life that we forgot it was ever new: the checkout beep. Before 1974 nothing in a store beeped like that. Now it is the global shorthand for "purchase acknowledged," the audio signature of a thousand payment terminals and kiosks.
