The Pocket Translator That Traded Brains
In 1978, the Lexicon LK-3000 sold a pocket translator with no processor of its own — all the logic lived inside the cartridge. To change what it did, you didn't load software. You swapped in a whole new brain.
Hold this thing and you will not be able to guess where the computer is. There are two pieces: a slick, wedge-shaped base that looks like a calculator you'd blame for your taxes — keypad, a red 16-character LED display, batteries, and a slot in the side. And there is the cartridge, a chunky plastic brick that slides into that slot and doesn't fit anywhere else.
Here is the part nobody expected. The base is empty.
The 1978 Lexicon LK-3000 is one of the cleanest cases I have ever seen of a machine deliberately lying about which side of the interface does the thinking. By the late 1970s, "cartridge" meant one thing to the public: the software rides in the plastic, the machine stays behind. The Fairchild Channel F put the code in its Videocart, kept the 8080. The RCA Studio II did the same and shipped a console that was really just two keypads. The Milton Bradley Microvision — the most extreme example — put a whole processor in each cartridge, but the base still had a screen and controls to make the code run. Obvious rule of the era: the computer is the box you keep; the cartridge is the memory you swap.
The LK-3000 looks like it's playing the same game. It is not. There is no CPU in the base. There is no ROM. There is not even a scratch of RAM worth mentioning. Everything that can think lives inside that plastic brick you just snapped in — its own processor, its own read-only memory with the language burned in. To go from English-to-French to English-to-German, you don't load a file and you don't run a program. You pull one brain out and push another in. The shell is a host, waiting to be possessed.
Nobody did that. Every other cartridge machine of the decade treated the cartridge as storage and the console as the computer. The LK-3000 ran the whole premise backward: the console as a socket, the cartridge as the machine. It was consumer hot-swappable processors, a decade before anyone had a word for "software-defined." The design decision wasn't cleverness for its own sake — at the price a pocket translator could command, a fixed processor with swappable firmware was out of reach, but a shell that could fit whichever chip each cartridge happened to carry was easiest and cheapest. So the maker did the honest thing and admitted it: the shell is nothing, the cartridge is everything.
That inversion of responsibility is the whole texture of the artifact. Think about what it does to the ritual of use. With a normal computer, you sit at the same machine and the machine changes around its fixed identity. With the LK-3000, you are the fixed thing, and the identity hops into you. You become English-to-French, then you become English-to-Spanish, then — because Lexicon shipped six or seven cartridges, and Nixdorf Computer AG sold the same unit under its own badge — you become whatever brick you happened to carry that day. The little red display that spells out results shares the machine with a processing unit that only arrived two seconds ago, in your other hand.
I have watched the museum fill up with physical tokens — TI-59 cards that were your program, Cauzin strips that were your bytes, iButton cans that were your identity. The LK-3000 belongs to that family, but at the more radical end: it is a token that isn't just your code, it's your CPU. Where other era hardware split "software" and "hardware" into two clean categories, this thing refuses the split entirely — the thing that knows French ends up being a plastic brick you carry in your coat pocket, and the thing you type on ends up being furniture.
It failed commercially, of course. Nobody built a software community around machines you had to physically substitute to upgrade, and the moment cheap microprocessors got a little cheaper, the "swap the brains" dodge became a "just load the program" elegance, and the LK-3000 transitioned gently into obsolescence. But it is my favorite kind of failure — a bet on a wrong and beautiful premise, the whole hardware/software boundary balled up and handed across the counter in your palm, like a heart you're expected to carry in and out of a patient.
The transistor in your phone today is a fixed, always-awake thing running a fixed operating system, and the "cartridge" has dissolved into the cloud. But for a couple of years in 1978, the most portable way to carry a capability was to carry a brain, literally, in the format of a child's building block. I like that the era's pocket translator — the least serious computer in the room — was the one brave enough to ship with no computer in it at all.
