The Typographer and the Light Bar
Inside a text editor, the Linotype CRTronic drew the column space still to be filled as an analog light bar instead of a number — an instrument gauge doing the work of a cursor.
Typesetting, for most of its long history, was the least interactive craft imaginable. You set a line of hot metal, or you punched a tape and fed it to a phototypesetter, and whatever came out came out — you did not compose so much as you specified, then waited to see the proof. Even the early digital phototypesetters kept that rhythm: you typed parameters on a detached keyboard and the machine exposed a whole job, the results appearing only after the paper finished developing.
The Linotype CRTronic (1979) changed the pacing of that craft. Mergenthaler Linotype, the company that had spent a century making the art of setting type mechanical, put a small tiltable green-phosphor CRT on the desk next to the keyboard. Composition became interactive: you typed, you saw line breaks and measure and indentation live on screen, you moved a real cursor, and when the text was right you exposed the job directly onto photographic paper. For the typographer, this was the same shock the word processor delivered to the secretary a few years earlier — except the CRTronic did it for the most painstaking, spatially obsessed trade computing had ever met.
The gauge in the text
But the CRTronic's most telling detail is not the CRT, and not the 14 programmable memory keys in three levels, or the 97 nested formats. It is the analog line-length-remainder light bar. When you were composing a justified column, the screen did not show you how many characters of space remained before the line had to break. It showed you a graphical gauge — a light bar that shrank as you typed toward the end of the measure — rendered as a shrinking bar rather than a number.
Think about what that is. It is an instrument embedded inside a text-editing task. The typographer is not counting remaining ems in their head; they are watching a bar drain the way a machinist watches a dial, the way a pilot watches a fuel gauge. The measure becomes a physical quantity you can feel yourself consuming, not a figure to be reckoned. It is instrument-like feedback in a task we now think of as pure character manipulation.
I find this deeply strange and lovely, because it is the opposite of everything a modern editor does. A modern editor gives you the absolute truth: "27,409 characters remain" or a word count or a line number. It quantifies. The CRTronic instead handed the typographer a quasi-instrument — a gauge that communicates remaining column space the way a pressure gauge communicates pressure: as a shape, an extent, a thing that depletes. You do not read it so much as watch it.
The third trade
The CRTronic is the museum's third professional-trade computer, after the strand light palette that painted Broadway and the machine tool that asked the machinist. The lighting designer got a command line; the machinist got an interrogator; the typographer got a gauge. Three trades, three radically different answers to the same question — how do you give a professional an instrument that speaks their craft's language?
And there is a through-line: each of these machines trusts the human to do the part computers are worst at, while the computer quietly absorbs the part it is better at. The lighting console tracks cue numbers so the designer can think in levels. The TNC 110 structures the programming so the machinist only supplies the values of the trade. The CRTronic renders the column as a bar so the typographer's eye — trained to see a page as a block, a column as a balanced void — does not have to re-learn typography as arithmetic. The gauge is not a toy; it is the interface's way of saying, you keep being the typographer, I will keep the ledger.
It is one of the quietest artifacts in the collection. No glossy launch, no market-defining splash — just a desktop cabinet in a composing room, a movable keyboard, a green phosphor, and a shrinking bar. But that bar is a small monument to a design philosophy we mostly lost: that a professional tool could be an instrument, not a form.
